A piano that sounds great as a jazz solo instrument may not sit well in a mix or for a live performance with a band. Looks like it might be a Kontakt problem, no surprise there. The Galaxy Vintage D sounds interesting but they are having their own problems with the pedal not releasing. Steinberg Grand 1&2 never impressed me but I haven't heard The Grand 3 yet. Just to level set, I'm an Ivory fan with the Yamaha and Italian Grand being my favorites for jazz. For $99.00 you simply cannot go wrong with this piano and when the fix is released it will be killer for all around work. Other than that, the piano sounds great and is very playable. Probably because the instrument they sampled isn't known for a strong low end. The sound however is very nice but lacks "oomph" on the low end. Yes the fixes help but there is still something going on however with the temp fixes it is very playable. Still I find the Walker more rewarding to play and again there is more detail and depth to the sound over all dynamic ranges.As for Alicia Keys piano, the latency is terrible and unless certain systems aggravate it more or less, I can't see how any pianist worth her salt could play it in it's current state? The Maverick does sound more alive to me when playing though it has a darker tone (I love a bit o' Bechstein). I always preferred the Maverick to the Grandeur (but horses for courses) and I find that my mind hasn't changed after a bit of a break from using them. I will not say that The Grandeur is bad at all but these are some thoughts on a comparison between the two, all my opinion. At gentle lower velocities the Grandeur almost sounds like it's been pushed away from you to make it quieter while the Walker stays close and intimate. When you're bashing something out the difference is still there but less noticeable. I find the difference is much more marked at lower velocities. This translates to a feeling of life in the Walker that just isn't there (for me) in the Grandeur. The Walker has more depth and the Grandeur can tend towards hmmm less than three dimensions. Right now Im using Stylus for drums and Ivory and Xpand 2 but looking for some better solutions for acoustic instruments and maybe effects to replace Xpand 2. The Grandeur can feel almost muffled in comparison but certainly more "flat" (muffled isn't quite the right word, I think flat is better). Just curious as to what people are using for production work. There is just way more detail in the sound coming from the Walker. Tried to match volume levels between the two.
I used Hammer+Wide mics and the Classical preset on the Embertone, Basic Grandeur setting on NI. There's a couple of things I would say and bear in mind the subjective nature of this: I was playing through headphones for this test.
